The great bond between popular music and the automobile is growing stronger. The megamedia impresario Funkmaster Flex the reigning D.J. who is the Dick Clark of the hip-hop world is the latest proof of the link. Hip-hop videos and songs tie directly into the musical automotive tradition of /b]"Little Red Corvette,"[/b] "Mustang Sally" and "Rocket 88" even Robert Johnson's 1938 paean to a Hudson, "Terraplane Blues," or, going back to the early days of the 20th century, "My Merry Oldsmobile."
Automakers are tiptoeing toward an acknowledgement of hip-hop. Funkmaster Flex has his own edition of the Lincoln Navigator, but he has been upstaged in this area by Sean (P. Diddy) Combs. (Flex has known Mr. Combs for so long that he can't stop calling him "Puffy.") The Sean Jean Navigator is now available for $85,000 and includes three DVD players, six TV screens and a PlayStation 2.
The Sean Jean and Funkmaster Flex editions are not produced by Lincoln itself, nor does Ford endorse the Shaquille O'Neal edition of the Expedition, offered by AutoOz. It comes with a "muscular appearance package" that includes a stainless steel grille and side air extractors, 22-inch Giovanna wheels and a "well-dressed interior appearance package" of black and pearl Italian leather, gold trim and 10-CD changer.
How long will it be before the companies that once offered cars with Cartier, Bill Blass and Givenchy editions, and now promote Eddie Bauer, Orvis and even Looney Tunes officially come out with a rapper ride that offers some bling-bling for the road?
