More awards for Tim Berners-Lee, the father of the World Wide Web
quote:
The inventor of the World Wide Web, Tim Berners-Lee of Britain, was on Thursday awarded the first Millennium Technology Prize worth one million euros (1.67 million dollars), the jury said.

"The Web has significantly enhanced many people's ability to obtain information central to their lives," Pekka Tarjanne, former secretary-general of the International Telecommunication Union and chairman of the award selection committee, said in a statement.

"The Web is encouraging new types of social networks, supporting transparency and democracy, and opening up novel avenues for information management and business development," The Agence France Presse quoted Tarjanne as saying.

Berners-Lee, 48, was born in Britain and is currently director of the World Wide Web Consortium at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston.

With a background in system design in real-time communications and text-processing software development, he invented the Web while working at CERN, the world's largest particle physics laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland.

The web was first made available to the public in 1991.

Berners-Lee created the first server, browser, and protocols central to the operation of the Web: the URL address, HTTP transmission protocol and HTML code. In 2003, he was named a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire for his pioneering work.

This is giving honor where honor is due.

Ojoto:

I thought this Father of the Internet thing was put to rest some months ago. If the real father of the Internet is being paid millions of dollars and euros for his invention, who is paying this Yoruba Guardian hagiographer named Uduma Kalu for this scam?

Whats your point on the scam? There is a difference between the person who invented WWW and the person who made it faster. Philllip did not invent WWW, that was the focus of the award. The award is not on speed. Phillip was noted for speed. Copy?

By the way this thread should be in TECH colume.

Phillip Emeagwali is probably one of the biggest 419 on the internet. The only place you find all these claims of world this world that is in Emeagwali's web site.I am yet to see an independent source attribute all these feat to him.

Emeagwali's shameless self promotion has gone from being irritating to annoying.A reputable scientists work speaks for itself, but not so for this man. He will stop at nothing for cheap publicity, tufiakwa.

Waypoint, you wrote:

Are you sure Philip agrees with you that he did not invent the WWW? You'd better go and check with him before he accuses you of trying to take away his title.

BTW, I am not the one that started the thread. COPY?

As Igbo people, we are quick to boast that traditional Igbo society was a place where people earned their place in society based on merit. That is why we as Igbo people must reject the effort of this pathologhical liar named Philip Emeagwali to dupe us with false and disgusting propaganda about himself. If we tolerate Emeagwali's lies simply because he is Igbo, then we have lost the moral grounds to condemn the Hausa-Fulani and Yoruba for destroying the merit system and enthroning mediocrity in BiafraNigeria.

There is no better time to say no to Emeagwali's 419 than now that we say we are fighting for a new Biafran nation. Besides, if we turn the other way to Emeagwali's lies on the web, it will only be a matter of time before the enemies of Nd'Igbo begin to cite our conduct as evidence of our collusion (as a collective) in fraud.

Why is everyone 419? The indiscriminate use of this typology to disparage someone your not in agreement with carries no weight as opposed to the true meaning or significance of what 419 actualy stands for. Use it appropriately and not as a result of anger. Or if your implying that Phillip is a fake then you must be an absolute wrong in your reasoning.

I can't find the link to the article now. But, some time ago, there was a very well written article about that Emeagwali character, which laid out all the lies at his website, including the lies about winning some equivalent of Nobel Prize, being father of the Internet, Super Brain, and all that. If you don't know, know it now, that lies like that are 419. 419 people tell lies about who they are and then they use the lies to try and gain advantage over some people to the dismay of honest citizens.

I am not even going to waste my time on this, let anyone who has any facts to buttress all these things Emeagwali is claiming post it here so the whole of BNW can see. Unfortunately for him the accademic community is the most visible on the net, we want to see independent confrimation of these claims from reputable sources.

Here is the article thatyou are searching for that addresses Emeagwali's self promotion.

Here is the original article.

Ednut:

The issue here is far too serious to be dismissible by the "small minds discuss people, average minds discuss events, and great minds discuss ideas" mantra. We are talking about removing deceit in the way individual achievement is reported, especially, as Onyemaechi pointed out, when it comes to operating an effective system of merits. Some of our people have already been duped by this gentleman. If you read even the Guardian article alone, you could see that it is replete with more of the same kinds of deliberate deceit that Chioma Ezeilo exposed some months ago.

The basis of this so called research was a common google search !!! This is really crass.

" The researchers then used the list of 100 greatest scientists and inventors of the 20th century to determine the result. "We used google.com to determine the most popular website for each scientist. Then Link Popularity was used to determine the number of links," it went on. "

Chiboy:

Apparently, the article by Chioma Ezeilo was so well written that the Encyclopedia section of the Science Daily has selected the article as a critical reference for the entry on Philip Emeagwali. It is troubling to read that "Donita Brown" who instigated this so-called Google Search engine recognition is said to be non other than the wife of Mr. Philip Emeagwali. Note that I said "Mr." not "Dr." It turns out that Emeagwali's Ph.D. thesis was rejected, and his court cases challenging the University of Michigan were dismissed. Thus, Emeagwali does not have a doctorate degree.

I don't like the manner in which emeagwali has been portrayed as being fake by his fellow Nigerians and Biafrans but if it is easy to win the Gordon prize for parallel processing or whatever how many blacks has won it. Check the list below .

http://www.sc2000.org/bell/pastawrd.htm

Still checking

There seems to be only one

Maybe it is not so easy after all
