I was alarmed to learn the extent of the AIDS pandemic in South Africa. According to ABC News, one out of every nine South Africans has the AIDS virus. Nelson Mandela should be commended for going public with the cause of his son's death.

Makgatho Mandela, 54, had been critically ill for several weeks after being admitted to a Johannesburg hospital late last year.

Mr Mandela called for renewed efforts to fight Aids, challenging the taboo that surrounds the disease in Africa.

Mr Mandela's younger son, Thembekile, died in a car crash during his father's imprisonment in the apartheid era.

The apartheid government refused to allow him to attend that funeral.

If that were in BiafraNigeria, Obasanjo would hide the body and claim that his son was killed by armed robbers.

Kudos to Nelson Mandela for his continued leadership.
