Politics: Shagari Berates Politicians Former President, Alhaji Shehu Shagari has berated politicians in this dispensation for engaging in personal condemnation of one another instead of highlighting on issues confronting the survival of the country�s nascent democracy and the development of the nation. The former president, who made the remark while fielding questions from Daily Independent in Sokoto, said, however, that there was no alternative to democracy. Shagari, who had earlier criticised the Independent National Election Commission�s (INEC)�s arrangement for lacking secrecy, shortly after being watched by voters who wanted to see where his vote will go during the April,12 National Assembly elections, commended the conduct of the April 19 elections, saying: �Under the present circumstances, INEC has tried�. Emphasising that he was speaking on a general basis, Shagari said, �despite the typical Nigerian tendency towards hypocrisy, I believe that the majority of Nigerians cannot be fooled all the time. There will soon come a time when Nigerians can no longer tolerate double standards. The march towards reality has already started.
