Campaign Ill-timed, Wrong, Says IBB Former military leader, General Ibrahim Babangida, yesterday in Minna reacted to the on-going campaign to draft him into the 2007 presidential election and said the moves were ill-timed. Babangida who was fielding questions from newsmen after a prayer at his Minna country home with family members and friends to mark his 62nd birthday anniversary said the clamour to contest the next presidential election was wrongly timed and too early. He added that "the call to contest is timely wrong. It is wrong to talk about 2007 now. There are many important things in the country to talk about." The former leader who said he was aware of the call and clamour on him to take a shot at the presidency in 2007, stated that he cannot stop the people behind the campaign, as "they are only exercising their right. I can't stop them," he said. He then advised those calling on him to contest the 2007 elections to give the government a breathing space. "You should be fair to the government in place. There is government that is trying hard to make things work for the people," he said. Babangida added that, "Nigerians should not occupy this government with things (2007 presidential elections) that is still far away from now.... (This Day) |
