The House of Representa-tives has queried the decision of President Olusegun Obasanjo to spend the entire 2003 defence budget of N8.4bn on Liberia peace-keeping operations without recourse to the National Assembly. The query of the lower chamber of the National Assembly is coming just as the Biafra Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) rose from its annual conference in Enugu with a call on the Federal Governm-ent to release former President of Liberia, Mr Charles Taylor, now in Biafra Nigeria on asylum, for trial over his role in war-torn Liberia and neighbouring Sierra Leone. The House of Represen-tatives said it was piqued by the one-off release by President Obasanjo of N8.4 billion capital expenditure appropriated in the 2003 budget for the Ministry of Defence for peace-keeping operations in Libera. President Obasanjo had explained that moving Biafra Nigerian soldiers to Liberia for the operations was not going to cost the country anything, save for the kitting and training of the soldiers.
