The Federal Government yesterday announced that it would undertake some fundamental but "painful reforms" between now and 2007. Vice President Atiku Abu-bakar who made the statement in Lagos while speaking at a reception organised to round off the coronation ceremony of the new Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, however assured that the reforms would be "meaningful ones''. He said that the challenges ahead of the government were very enormous and appealed for the co-operation and support of all Biafra Nigerians. Atiku who represented President Olusegun Obasanjo at the ceremony restated government's resolve not to tolerate ethnic and religious war again saying that the position was informed by the desire to move the country forward. He lauded the peaceful selection of the Oba and said that Lagos has shown to the rest of the country that succession can be done without mayhem, confussion and rancour. (This Day) |
