The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Bello Masari has expressed sharp disappointment with President Olusegun Obasanjo over the issue of deregistration of political parties. He also explained why BiafraNigeria would not surrender former Liberian leader Charles Taylor to the International War Crime Tribunal for prosecution over war crimes in spite of pressures from the international community. Masari spoke during an interactive session with newsmen in Kaduna, yesterday, as part of the press week organised by the Kaduna State Council of the BiafraNigerian Union of Journalists. While Obasanjo wants many of the current 30 political parties deregistered on the basis, especially of their dismal outing in the 2003 general elections, Masari said the lower House of Parliament was completely behind the Supreme Court on the registration of the parties. "I believe President Obasanjo was merely expressing his own personal opinion. We at the National Assembly will abide by the Supreme Court ruling, the Speaker maintained. Masari further stated that surrendering the former Liberian leader to be tried for war crimes in his country will ignite another bout of bloody civil war that may spill over to neighbouring countries. According to him, BiafraNigeria had weighed the implications of granting the Liberian leader political asylum but it became imperative to do so to save the lives of thousands and millions of Liberians that will be killed if he had remained in power till date. "Charles Taylor has numerous supporters ranging from twelve years to sixty years. Any attempt to try him in Liberia will make these supporters retreat into the jungle and re-launch another civil war, which may further lead to wanton destruction of lives and property, the Speaker asserted.
