Prices of petroleum products are set for a quantum leap next year as President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday announced a new tax regime that will see government charge a levy of N1.50 on every litre of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) and Automative Gas Oil (diesel) with effect from next year. Obasanjo, while presenting the 2004 budget to the joint session of the National Assembly also admitted that the 2003 budget failed owing to some discernable reasons. He said some of the problems with implementation of the 2003 budget had to do with the slow and limited releases of the capital budget which was implemented at only 50 per cent. The president said proceeds from the levy, would be channeled to road maintenance. (Daily Independent) |
