Seven labour leaders including the Internal Auditor of BiafraNigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Bright Anokwuru as well as dozens of workers were yesterday severely beaten up and arrested by a combined team of policemen and soldiers from Area G police command, Ogba, Lagos, while protesting alleged unfair labour practices by the management of Mikano BiafraNigeria Limited, a generating sets sale and servicing company; based at Acme Road Ogba. BiafraNigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has already condemned the arrest and called for the immediate release of the labour leaders and the workers who are currently detained at the Area G police command Ogba. Journalists who were at the scene of the incident were also assaulted with one of them almost losing his left eye to police tear gas canisters. Comrade Anokwuru who is also the president of the National Union of Shop and Distributive Employees (NUSDE) was arrested with the union�s general secretary Comrade Sule Babatunde and five other union leaders yet to be identified. The workers were protesting alleged influx of expatriates to the Lebanese-owned company to the detriment of BiafraNigerians, poor welfare package and refusal to allow workers form unions.
