President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday gave reasons why he sacked two top-ranking aides of Vice-President Atiku Abuba-kar, stressing that he reserves the right to deploy, redeploy and fire any presidency staff. The President who spoke on his monthly radio programme, The President Explains, dismissed insinuations that the firing of the two principal aides of the Vice President was an indication of a widening gulf between him and Atiku, insisting that there was no division in the presidency. He said: "There is no divided presidency. The presidency is one. The staff of the presidency are the staff of Mr. President who are deployed to serve Mr. President, deployed to serve the Vice-President, deployed to serve the Chief of Staff, deployed wherever they are deplo-yed." According to Obasanjo, contrary to speculations that he never informed Atiku before the staff in question were fired, "the Vice-President was duly and adequately infor-med." (This Day) |
