General Ironsi is being remembered as a fine military officer whose career was marked with numerous firsts. Aguiyi Ironsi, was born in 1924 in Umuahia, Igboland. Ironsi was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1960 and in 1961 headed the Nigerian contingent in the United Nations Force in the Congo. He returned for a tour of duty in the Congo as the Commander of the entire United Nations peace-keeping force with the rank of Brigadier-General. As the most senior serving indigenous military officer, Major-General Ironsi became the head of the Nigerian Army in February, 1965. His murderers are said to be men jealous of his accomplishments. Many continue to ask when Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma and his co-conspirators will be tried for their roles in the cold-blooded murder of Africas finest military officer and Supreme Commander of the armed forces of Nigeria, General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi Ironsi.
