 Investigating Corruption: INEC Passes the Buck to State Commissioners
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has
directed state resident electoral commissioners accused of having compromised their positions during the recent
elections to prepare their defense against the allegations against them. Federal INEC Commissioner, Alhaji Shehu
Musa, who disclosed this in the Plateau State capital, said the commission was not insensitive to the allegations
against some of its officials. "We are not in a position to know all the mal-practices perpetrated directly.
As a commission, we have asked all the resident electoral commissioners to brief the commission on all the allegations
of rigging against them, especially where elections were alleged not to have held, he stated. He disagreed with
the notion that the election was not a success in view of widespread complaints even from foreign observers, arguing,
"there is no place where you have perfect elections. On the whole, we (INEC) feel comfortable that we have
done our best, and the essence of the tribunals is to hear all the petitions that arose as a result of the election"
