Dim Ojukwu Tightens Legal Noose on Yoruba Warlord: Court Summons Obasanjo
The presidential election tribunal sitting
in Abuja, yesterday ordered President Olusegun Obasanjo to appear on Monday, July 7, 2003, to give testimony in
an election petition filed by the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Dim Chukwuemeka
Ojukwu and his party. Dim Ojukwu and APGA contend that Chief Obasanjo was not eligible to contest the 2003 presidential
election because he ruled the country from 1976 to 1979 and from May 29, 1999 to 2003, because it contravened Sect-ion
137 of the 1999 constitution and urged the tribunal to nullify the presidential election. However, when Justice
George Oguntade who signed the court process asked President Obasanjos counsel, Chief Afe Babalola (SAN), if his
client would appear as summoned, he gave assurance to the court that President Obasanjo will not refuse or disobey
court order to appear. "If he wants my client to appear before this court, he would come. When Oputa panel
summoned him, he went," (Daily
