General Philip Effiong has died. News of General Effiong's death has thrown Biafrans and human rights conscious people worldwide into mourning. Major General Philip Effiong was the Ibibio-born Biafran who served as General Odumegwu Ojukwu's second in command and joined all patriotic Easterners in fighting a war of survival against genocidal murderers of Hausa-Fulani, Tiv-Jukun, Lantan, Yoruba, and other stock who initiated a campaign of murder on the Igbo and other Easterners and proceeded to vandalize the Biafran homeland. General Effiong was working on his memoir before his death yesterday. General Effiong will be remembered as an anti-genocide crusader and for working to remove the name "Biafra" in his 1970 broadcast purporting to surrender the struggle for Biafran independence. Instead of surrendering Biafra, Effiong surrendered what he called "this country," and nowhere in the entire broadcast did Effiong name the country he was surrendering. The importance of that deliberate omission only became clear recently when the Biafra Liberation Movement (BLM) and other groups resumed the struggle for Biafran independence. (BNW News) |
