Fresh facts emerged yesterday that the Federal Government, through its agencies, is still tinkering with the current security arrangement in the Niger Delta. Following renewed cases of abduction of oil workers and attacks on the equipment of multinational companies by some restive youths, military and police chiefs reportedly returned to the drawing board on how to effectively police the region. After series of consultations, the security top officials reportedly agreed to form a joint anti-militia squad to be redeployed to the Niger Delta without further delay. The new squad will draw its personnel from both the police and the armed forces. Giving an insight into the functions of the anti-militia squad, a source at Defence Headquarters said that the security personnel when deployed, would protect the workers and the facilities of the oil companies operating in the region. The new security outfit, the source added, would accompany the staff buses of the oil firms and guard oil installations to check cases of hostage taking. (Guardian) |
