The Senate, yesterday dissolved all its standing committees except the committee on foreign affairs and that for the review of the constitution which however became ad-hoc committees. Moving the motion for their dissolution the Senate Leader, Dalhatu Tafida, decried the performance of some of the committees which he said had not done anything although he acknowledged good performance by some in spite of financial constraints and assured that the committees will soon be reconstituted. The Senate also yesterday approved N267,220,347,806 to be spent in the Supplementary Appropriation Bill 2003, out of which N78,855,283,938 was for recurrent expenditure, N89,365,630 goes to capital expenditure while N99 billion is to settle some domestic debts for the year ending December 2003. Chairman Senate appropriation and finance committee, Senator John Azu Mbata, said N8 billion naira had been appropriated to cover monetisation of top federal government civil servants and N5 billion for the National Stadium Abuja and the velodrome that was recently destroyed in a windstorm. The federal ministry of works got N7 billion naira for road projects and the settlement of contract liabilities. The Bill was however passed amidst protests from chairmen of some sub-committees of the appropriation committee who complained that what was passed by the Senate did not reflect submissions made by the various committees.
