The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has ordered the Deputy Senate President, Alhaji Ibrahim Mantu; Deputy Senate Leader, Dr. Jonathan Zwingina; and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, against further public statements or remarks on the controversial bribery allegation by the minister against the senators. The order, communicated to the three men on Wednesday, is part of a frantic trouble-shooting by the partys leadership and the Presidency in the wake of el-Rufais testimony before the Senate Ethics and Privileges Committee where he gave details of his encounters with the two principal Senate officers during which he alleged they made the demand for bribe. Earlier in the week, President Olusegun Obasanjo was said to have reached the two senators and prevailed on them to drop their plans to seek legal redress against el-Rufai. A party source quoted the President as telling the two senators that taking the matter to court would merely open another circus for further ridicule of the protagonists, the Senate and his governments campaign against graft without resolving the key question of whether or not the demand for bribe was made. The inner caucus of the PDP had met on the issue after a meeting of the National Executive Committee earlier in the week and determined that the controversy needed to be urgently quenched to avoid prolonged embarrassment to the party and government.
