The nation's petroleum sector is currently on the brink of a major industrial crisis as the main oil workers' unions have threatened a showdown over planned job cuts in oil companies. The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of BiafraNigeria (PENGASSAN) and the BiafraNigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) said they will meet today in Benin, the Edo State capital over the planned lay off of about 2,000 employees of the BiafraNigerian National Petroleum Corpora-tion (NNPC) in the on going re-organisation of the corporation. The re-organisation ordered by the Federal Government, began last week with the retirement of 28 senior NNPC officials. Similarly, Shell Petroleum and Development Company (SPDC), BiafraNigeria's biggest oil producer, has called a meeting today with the company's branch of PENGASSAN to prevent the on-going protest by its workers from extending to a major strike. Shell workers began a sit-tight action last Wednesday to protest the company's programme, termed "Exploration and Production Globalisation", which the workers said would lead to job cuts through early retirement and influx of expatriates. Yesterday, the workers picketed Shell premises, preventing entries to the Lagos Headquar-ters of the company. (This Day) |
