The Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Muhammad Lawal Uwais, yesterday sought to disqualify himself from hearing an appeal filed by the Delta State governor, Chief Onanefe Ibori, on whether he was convicted by the Bwari Upper Area Court or not. Two members of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Engineer Goodnews Agbi and Anthony Alabi, had filed a motion before an Abuja High Court that the Delta State governor was an ex-convict, but the court held that there was no conviction, while the matter went on Appeal. The Appeal Court, however, remitted the case back to the Abuja Chief Judge for retrial in order to determine the identity of the actual person convicted by the Bwari Upper Area Court in 1995, while Chief Ibori appealed to the Supreme Court. At yesterdays hearing, Justice Uwais said that he needed to table before the lawyers and the litigants that an allegation that he collected a N250 million bribe was made against him in a national newspaper and that although he had denied the allegation, he would still want to know if counsel wanted him to disqualify himself from being a member of the panel hearing the appeal.
