The political situation in Anambra State seemingly got nastier at the weekend with allegation of suspected assassins storming the Ihiala residence of House of Representatives member, Chuma Nzeribe gunning for his life. But the suspected killers did not meet their target, Nzeribe, who claimed that he had gone to Port Harcourt earlier on Friday. While confirming the said attempt on his life to The Guardian last night, he accused the state government of masterminding the failed act in a desperate attempt to cover its tracks over the Anambra political saga. But in a swift reaction, the government described the assassination allegation as a tissue of lies. Mr Fred Chukwulobe, Special Adviser to Governor Chris Ngige on Media and Publicity, said no one was after the legislator's life. According to him, Nzeribe was among past government officials holding on to government property including vehicles and have rebuffed repeated appeals to return the property in their possession. Indeed, Nzeribe stated that the suspected assassins had gone to his house at Ihiala on the pretext that they were there to retrieve official vehicles in his possession. He alleged that those who came to his house at the early hours of yesterday while the households were still asleep, had other intentions than to retrieve vehicles. (Guardian) |
