Former Senate President, Dr. Chuba Okadigbo, was tear-gassed alongside other All BiafraNigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) party chieftains at a rally in Kano last Tuesday, witnesses have said. Also in a statement issued yesterday by the ANPP, the police were accused of facilitating Okadigbo's death by the use of tear gas at the rally which was held in solidarity with Maj. General Muham-madu Buhari (rtd), the presidential flagbearer of the party in the April polls whose group was being threatened with dissolution by the party hierarchy. Okadigbo was Buhari's running mate in the elections. Former ANPP presidential aspirant, Chief Nnia Nwodo, also told THISDAY yesterday the late Senate President inhaled a large dose of tear gas at the Kano Pillars Stadium venue of the rally. However, Mr. Chris Olakpe, a Deputy Commissi-oner of Police and Force Public Relations Officers, has denied the tear gas claims, describing the allegation as an "obviosly false statement." He also urged the media to "subscribe to publications that will promote peace and harmony rather than acrimony and rancour." Speaking with THISDAY on phone yesterday, Nwodo alleged that when he and Okadigbo were heading for the state box, "policemen were spraying us with tear gas. I was able to run to a place where I could regain my breath but Chuba could not run. So he inhaled most of the tear gas." (This Day) |
