Pedro Explains New Environmental Policy Initiatives New initiative of the Lagos state government designed to rid the state of the extensive presence of refuse on its roads and streets will do a "test-run" in 20 municipal or highly urbalised local government areas of the state. The local governments include Lagos Island East, West, Mushin, Somolu, Ikeja, Agege, Kosofe, Eti-Osa Ikoyi - Obalende, Surulere, Agboyi-Ketu, among others. Deputy Governor, Olufemi Pedro, while speaking with newsmen at the end of the inspection tour of Agbado-Okeodo LGA as part of the monthly sanitation efforts, disclosed that under the new programme, tenants will bag and keep their refuse on their frontage while PSP operators already engaged by the State Government will be around to pick them. Operators will pick the refuse 24 hours and at no cost to the people in various houses while corporate organisations would pay a stipulated amount monthly for the waste disposal. He said, in areas where the programme cannot immediately take-off, the state will establish communal depots which will be manned 24 hours a day and will be promptly evacuated to avoid creating undue backlog. Pedro also declared that the efforts of the state government is already bearing fruits and translates into a cleaner Lagos adding too that the various payments are strutted to suit the pockets of each tenement and the administration will remain undeterred by flagrant violation of the state laws and plants. He assured that the KAI Marshals will be insured while also urging the police to protect all such personnel since their functions are dictated under an enabling law.
