...Clamps Down on Petroleum Marketers From Daniel Ior in Makurdi Benue State Committee on Petroleum Monito-ring has clamped down on major marketers of petroleum products, closing down some of their filling stations and warning them against indiscriminate increases in the pump prices of the products. Chairman of the committee, Bishop Yiman Orkwar, while sealing Total filling station in Gboko for selling petroleum products above approved price limits lamented that the major marketers were at the forefront of indiscriminate price increases in the state. He particularly expressed concern that the price of a litre of petrol in the state was different and higher than the one in other states of the federation and wondered while the major marketers have chosen to do so. He said the situation was particularly worrisome because most of the major marketers lift fuel either in the state or neighbouring state. "But even when they do so they still sold well above the approved price margins," he observed. Also, Benue State chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Boga Abuul, in an interview told THISDAY that the major marketers are not owners of refineries. A development, he said, was likely to improve the fuel situation in the country following the deregulation of the down stream sector.
