Enugu Evolves New Strategy in Waste Management From Emmanuel Ugwu in Enugu Enugu State government has adopted a fresh strategy to resolve its waste management problem with a view to evolving a culture of a clean environment in the state. The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Solid Minerals, Sir Sam Umesie, told newsmen that the strategy involved "waste to wealth" philosophy, which would be perfected so that waste management would no longer constitute a problem in the state. "In the new strategy, we are moving from waste to wealth," he said Umesie, who was appointed by the the Governor, Dr. Chima-roke Nnamani, to oversee the State Environmental Protection Agency (ENS-EPA) following the sack of the board for non-performance, said the agency was now poised to rid Enugu metropolis of the embarrassing heaps of refuse. Already the refuse heaps have started disappearing as the agency swung into action to beat the deadline issued by Nnamani for Enugu to be rid of refuse. For a long- term solution, Umesie stated that ENSEPA would partner with the private waste managers to achieve its goals and eventually it would become an entirely private sector affair .
