'We're Ready to Revive ASTUA' By Idowu Sowunmi Abia State Town Unions Association (ASTUA), Lagos State branch has concluded arrangements to revive the association and hold a general meeting involving all other socio-cultural groups from the state on August 8. Addressing the newsmen in Lagos yesterday, the Association's President, Dr. Chijioke Kanu, said the planned gathering is aimed at bringing Abians together and contribute to the development of the state, noting that "the general assembly of all Towns Unions from Abia State on August 8 intends to chart a new course for the state and enlighten Abians on the progress in the state, especially those in Diaspora." Kanu, who was flanked by the Association's 1st President, Chief (Mrs.) Goodness Abaribe and the Executive Trustee, Chief (Mrs.) Franca Osuwah, added that the meeting is majorly meant to revive ASTUA, which went under after the creation of autonomous communities in Abia State by government. He explained that the autonomous communities are a political creation of the state government in delivering the dividends of democracy to the grassroots while ASTUA is a socio-cultural and non-profit organisation. Also speaking, Osuwah observed that ASTUA has been in existence since 1990 but the creation of the autonomous communities divided the attention of most Abians who first took the initiatives to develop their communities. However, she said, these various groups would be brought under one the umbrella of ASTUA. On her part, the first vice president added that there was a greater need to bring themselves together because government alone cannot do it, saying "we will work together to assist ourselves."
