Existing Labour Law Undemocratic, Says NCP
By Oke Epia

A new dimension has been added to the controversy trailing the executive bill to amend the existing Trade Unions Act of 1978 as the National Conscience Party (NCP) described both the law and the bill as "grossly undemocratic," saying both fall below international standards.

In another development, the party announced its reluctance in accepting the decision of its National Chairman, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, not to recontest for the chairmanship office, disclosing that the constitution of the party would be amended to provide for the establishment of a Board of Trustees and expressed the hope that the retiring chairman "would kindly accept to be elected the chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Party."

Only last week, the National Assembly was presented with the bill seeking to decentralise the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and outlaw strike actions by labour unions after weeks of heated debate over the intentions and substance of the new bill.

But in a 12-point communique signed by the party's National Secretary, Mr. Femi Aborishade, and issued at the end of its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting which was held at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Tomb conference centre in Bauchi, Bauch State on July 24, the party stated that "the Trade Unions Act and its amendments overtime contain all the major undemocratic provisions in the current Bill, with the exception of the provision dealing with removal of the name of the NLC as the sole central labour organisation." The communiqu reasoned that "rather than merely resisting the removal of the name of the Nigeria Labour Congress from the list of registered unions in Nigeria," the NCPNEC called on "labour and the larger civil society community to fight against the principle of compulsory registration of unions."
