Officials Apprehend Water Pipeline Vandals From Chinedu Eze in Abakaliki An attempt to make Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital and its environs to face problem of water scarcity was foiled weekend when Ebonyi State Water Corporation monitoring team caught some hoodlums vandalising major water pipeline that supplies water to Abakaliki from the Ezillo Water Scheme in Ishielu Local Government area of the state. The General Manager of Ebonyi State Water Corporation, Mr. Paul Okorie, while speaking to newsmen, condemned the barbaric act and said the men were caught when trying to cut open the main water pipeline that supplies water to the capital city, without authority from the corporation. Okorie, who assured that the suspects must be brought to book, disclosed that there is an existing law, made four yours ago that prohibits illegal connections of water, which was what the suspects claimed that they were doing, and frowned at the rate with which people still vandalise water pipes in the state The general manager explained that such vandalisation of the pipes was the major cause of water shortage to the capital city, adding that any person or group of persons caught in such act would be prosecuted under the law. Parading the vandals at the police command Abakaliki, the officers of Criminal Investigation Bureau, who visited the site of the incident at Ezzamgbo, said the men were armed with axes, welding machines to enable them cut open the big pipe. In a cross-examination, one of the culprits, Mr. Sunday Nwanya, who is from Ezza South, said he was instructed by his master, Mr. Vincent Ehugbo of Ogoja Road, Abakaliki, whom he added, was contracted by one Mr. Anthony Onwe, a plumber to do the work.
