Agency Seeks Co-operation on Child Trafficking

A call has gone to Nigerians to work in close contact with the National Agency For Prohibition of Traffic in Persons and other Related Matters (NAPTIP) so as to eliminate the act of rafficking in persons even as the Agency has succeeded in uniting over 40 victims of trafficking in his one year of operation.

This call was made by the Executive Secretary/Chief Executive of the organisation, Mrs. Carol Ndaguba, while presenting a speech at the stakeholders dissemination meeting held at the Concorde Hotel Owerri, Imo State.

She highlighted that the Agency, which was newly created by Federal Government has decided to take the bull by the horn and presently over 50 cases of abuse and violation have been investigated and five of them are qualified to go to court, while one has been taken to court in Kano.

Ndaguba revealed that the Agency has established the National Investigation Task Force (NITF) across the country, comprising both the police and immigration and they have the capacity to respond to all cases of abuse and violation of the act anywhere in the federation, as according to her, various cases are being looked into and prosecutions are going on in some of the established once.

She stressed that Federal Government through the NAPTIP is doing every thing possible to comply with international standards in the fight against trafficking in persons.

According to her, Nigeria and Mauritania are the only two African counties that have specific laws on TIP and she revealed that next month NAPTIP would be one year old and that their achievement within this short period has been remarkable with the support of their partners especially UNICEF.

Mrs. Ndaguba said that they have carried out sensitisation visit to top government officials and traditional rulers in 11 project states, this she highlighted is aimed at creating, awareness in respect of the activities of the organization. She stressed that the meeting will add value not only to individuals but also to the Nation and the world in general and assured the participants that all the research recommendation will be effectively implemented.
