Ejiofor Bemoans State of Nigerian Democracy
By Emeka Enechi

Political Adviser to the Governor of Enugu State, Chief Sam Ejiofor, has described as unfortunate the brand of politics practised in Nigeria, saying the development alienated the people from those in authority and therefore created a yawning gap between the leaders and the led.

Ejiofor rather said Nigeria practised self-tocracy (politics of self) as against the popular and people-oriented democracy, which makes every citizen a partaker of governance. His words: "Politics should be looked at from the global perspective. And when this is done, it takes the shape of football as a game. In football, you have stakeholders which include spectators, players, managers, referees and so on. Once you take away one aspect, it affects the rest. That is how democracy functions. But in Nigeria, the reverve is the case. That is why we say that we have the best form of democracy in Nigeria in Enugu state because it is a people-oriented government. Everybody is important and everybody is carried along."

He attributed incessant tension, crisis and commotion across the states to overwhelming self-interest among politicians, which he said, rendered whatever effort they make towards a better Nigeria useless. He noted that except politicians changed their attitude and genuinely make governance participatory, the hope for a better society would remain a mirage. "Honestly, those in authority formulate good policies almost on a daily basis but the truth is that when it gets to implementation, the politics of self rears its ugly head again and that to a large extent stalls development," he observed.
