Trailer Crushes Woman in Abakaliki
From Chinedu Eze in Abakaliki
Tragedy struck in Abakaliki at the weekend when a trailer hauling beverages crushed middle aged woman (name withheld) and dismembered her body at the Meat Market area of Abakpa Main Market in the capital city.
According to eye witness account, the woman, who hailed from Enugu state, was on a commercial motorcycle popularly known as Okada that attempted to overtake the trailer with registration number AH554KSF and Maltina inscription on the body, in a busy and narrow intersection of Obiri/Gunning Road Streets when the Okada rider swayed under the trailer and in attempt to jump out of the seeming tragedy, the woman was knocked down under the 32-feet trailer and crushed by the tyres.
Meanwhile, the state Governor, Sam Egwu, who was on-the-spot inspection of the scene of the accident, has expressed shock over the incident and called on the members of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) to ensure that only tested and qualified motorcyclists were issued with driving licenses.
He called on police and other law enforcement agencies to continue to check the excesses of Okada riders attributing 70 per cent of the recorded cases of accidents in the metropolis to the careless and lack-luster attitude of the Okada riders.
The governor, who was accompanied on the visit by some members of the state executive council, the Medical Director, Ebonyi State University Teaching Hospital, Dr. Onyebuchi Chukwu and Chief of Staff to the Governor, Chief Mike Nwankwo, explained that he would soon visit the family of the deceased and assured that the traffic situation in the market would soon be addressed.
Egwu also directed the Medical Director of the EBSU Teaching Hospital to ensure the immediate repair of the malfunctioning morgue of the hospital and the generating sets to ensure that proper services were given to the deceased bodies deposited in the mortuary.
