FERMA To Complete Lagos Roads Repair By December
By TUNDE ALAO

THE Federal Ministry of Works has announced its readiness to complete the repair of federal roads in Lagos through the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) by the end of this year.

The Federal Controller for Works in Lagos, Mr Adedolapo Adeniji disclosed this during a visit by the Evaluation Committee on Federal Roads, adding that the only constraints to the agency's operation is finance.

Adeniji explained that the suspension of one of its contractors, Julius Berger Plc, from rehabilitation of Abeokuta-Lagos expressway, was as a result of the delay in execution of their job.

According to him, the agreement with the contractors on the rehabilitation of roads in Lagos is on retainership basis, meaning that the roads being constructed by those contractors must be maintained for a given period of time.

"But when the contractor, Julius Berger was asked to commence work there, they insisted on the agreement being signed first. This resulted in the undue delay which did not go down well with the Minister for Works, Senator Seye Ogunlewe, who asked our engineers to swing into action."

Adeniji however, said the road would be completed in a couple of weeks.

The Chairman of the committee, Alhaji Lawal Isa, said the quality of work being done in Lagos attests to the fact that Nigerian engineers can perform well like their foreign counterparts.

He said his committee was impressed with the quality of work being done by the local engineers in the repair and rehabilitation of roads.

"We have visited several places in Lagos and we are very much impressed with the quality of works being done. But, this is not an overall assessment of the situation of things, since we believe there is need for improvement, but so far, so good," he said.
