ACF faults Lar On Middle Belt Position
From: Saxone Akhaine
Kaduna.

The Arewa Consultative forum(ACF) has picked/ holes on the statement credited to erstwhile people Democratic party (PDP) National Chairman, Chief Solomor Lar, that the non-creation of Middle-Belt region was responsible for the instability in the North.

Lar was however said to have appealed to the federal government to consider separating the states under the Middle-Belt geographical location from the North, for the purpose of their self-identity.

But faulting the proposition, the Deputy Secretary General of ACF,Alhaji Inuwa Abdulkadri who spoke with Journalists in Kaduna said that Nigeria's had gone beyond the creation of regions, adding that the original Middle-Belt region was the old Benue. Plateau, Benue, Taraba, and Nasarawa states.

Said Abdulkadri: ''what does he (Lar) mean by Middle-Belt

  • There is no entity called Northern Region as an administrative structure. What does he mean by the creation of such region
  • We have gone beyond that we have 19 states in the North.''

It was the Benue Plateau that they wanted to be created. If he is referring to the recommendations of Edo, Delta and Benue-Plateau but that one had been split into Benue Nasarawa, Taraba and Plateau states, so what does he want again

  • Commenting on the proposed Northern Unity Conference (NUC), Alhaji Abdukadri argued that the original plan was to assemble everybody, the clergy, emirs, leaders and governors, so that they could sit down and find solutions to the frequent crises in the north.

The NUC as originally planned was sabotaged. But whether one likes it or not, there is a notorious fact that the people have been killing themselves in the north at an alarming rate, it happened in Plateau, and Kano states.

'' it is a problem that has to be addressed irrespective of these who are involved and one way of addressing such problems is to come together irrespective of ethnicity, religion or class in the society;and find solution to the problem.

'' This is where the objection raised by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 northern states on the NUC can be faulted. The governors as the Chief Security Officers (CSOs) of their states must be interesting in bringing everybody together. They not only have the constitutional responsibility to be responsible to the security of every person residing within their state but have the responsibility of ensuring that conducive atmosphere exist for harmonies and orderly co-exist in their states.

''Also the ACF as a non-governmental organisation that assign to itself the responsible of promoting harmonious co-existence among northerners and others Nigerians, equally should be interested in addressing those problems that bring about these crises.

The traditional rulers (emir) as the custodians of our norms and values and also being closest people to the common man are very much interested in the peaceful and harmonious co-existence in their domain.

So, it should also be out of place for the clergy who have the moral responsibility of informing and enlightening the people of peaceful and harmonious co-existence. So, I think it is wrong for anybody (CAN) to think that such gatherings, because of the presence of the governors is political and therefore dissociate themselves from it.

After all, the clergy should be able to and must inform and enlighten people about what the sceptres enjoin people to do, or believe us to do in every aspect of human endeavour, be it polite, economic, social and what knots. That gathering is big for any body to manipulate' Abdulkadir added
