So-Called Dividends Of Democracy
Sir: It is gradually becoming the "in-thing" for some governors and National Executive Officers to spend appreciable amount of public funds to advertise their so-called dividends of democracy in radio commentaries, TV adverts and National newspapers. And what are these dividends of democracy
Boreholes, Health Centres(two or three blocks), Schools (three to five blocks), Roads and possibly Housing Estates or Power Stations. Are these really tangible dividends
Were they executed as gifts to the State from the Officer's personal funds
If not, has the public any right to know how the quality of work done compares with the funds spent, i.e. output over input, in efficiency terms
The most painful part is that these projects are hastily "finished" and commissioned to suit political targets rather than the needs of the owners of the fund (the community), and no serious attention is given to the workability of the projects after commissioning. The spending machinery is immediately directed away to focus on new projects. Why must we hail these men
Are they not public servants who have done usually less than what they ought to have done
Should they not rather be made to render due account of their stewardship
We need to demand as well from our leaders, the weightier dividends of justice, equity, transparency, peace (safety of life and property of the people), and holy living. How does the character of our leaders measure on these scales
Anyone who does not score high on all the above may only receive the applause of men, but no eternal rewards from the Ultimate Judge and Lord of all.
