He has accordingly ordered his securitymen to remove all posters and photographs linking him with presumed interest in the presidency in 2007. Ironically, Alhaji Atiku made this clarification at a time political watchers are sensing some frosty relationship between him and his boss, President Olusegun Obasanjo. Atiku’s statement is also coming at a time when the acting chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Tony Anenih had noted that only President Obasanjo would nominate his successor. A statement by the Chief Information Officer to the President, Mr. Stephen Nelson said Alhaji Abubakar only got to know about such posters recently, while on his way to Lagos for a three-day visit. "Atiku on sighting the posters was surprised and outraged and immediately directed some securitymen in the entourage to remove all the posters," the statement said. It quoted Onukaba Ojo, an aide to the VP, who has described the pasting of such posters "as the handiwork of mischief makers bent on causing problems in the polity." "The Vice President is at present occupied with the task of assisting President Olusegun Obasanjo in bringing the dividends of democracy to the people. "No amount of mischief will distract him from achieving the goal of assisting the president to improve the lot of Nigerians," the statement said It quoted Ojo as saying that when the Vice-President eventually decides to run, "he will do so, based on the excellent and enviable records of his administration.
