Yoruba youths slam IBB: Quit now!

• Over June 12 annulment

MATTHEW OGWUCHE, (Bureau Chief, Abuja)

APPARENTLY picking a cue from the tone set by Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, the Council of Yoruba Youths (CYY) has demanded that former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida should back down from his purported 2007 presidential ambition as atonement for the June 12, 1993 election annulment.

National coordinator of the group who spoke at a news conference in Abuja, warned that if IBB does not stay clear of the 2007 race, they will invoke the spirit of June 12 which is alive against him in totality."

It further warned that "the natural law of karma dictates that what you don’t sow, you don’t reap," and urged IBB to note that.

The group insisted that if IBB proceeds with his game-plan based on what it described as his having the belief that if Obasanjo can come to be president after twenty years as a former head of state, he can equally repeat the feat fourteen years after leaving office," then he is misguided, it added

It claimed that it had seen through IBB’s strategy against the backdrop of speculations that he will soon apologise for his regime’s annulment of the June 12, 1993 elections widely believed to have been won by the late Chief M. K. O. Abiola, as a prelude to a public declaration to run for president.

It described such a speculated move as a ploy for IBB "to eat his cake and have it at the same time, this is what IBB is planning to do and it cannot work," the group added.

Fafere declared that it "will be a show of shame for Babangida to be talking of apologising for June 12, and at the same time be running for president asking Nigerians to give him a democratic mandate," an ideal which they claimed he denied others while in office for eight years.

It pleaded with IBB to borrow a leaf from the path of statesmanship which Gowon and Shagari have taken by remaining apolitical.

The group painted IBB’s rumoured ambition in the garb of "where a man will be praying for forgiveness for his sins and will concurrently be asking God for certain favours at the same time."
