Owerri youths protest over Oru festival
From Charles Ogugbuaja (Owerri)

SOME youths of Amawon and Umuororonjo communities in Owerri, Imo State capital at the weekend protested over the celebration of this year's edition of the Oru Festival.

The youths matched through the major roads of Douglas, Mbaise and Fire Service Roundabout in the metropolis setting up bonfires to express their opposition to the traditional ruler of the area, Eze Emmanuel Njemanze's plan to organise the ceremony at the Ugwu Ekwema Hall.

Police spent great deal of time firing canisters of tear gas to disperse the protesters. All through the major roads in the city, heavily armed mobile policemen accompany the celebrants to ensure his safety.

The roads that were blocked by the rampaging youths were re-opened by the police.

Eze Njemanze has conferred chieftaincy titles on some people in the area, including Owerri correspondent of the Vanguard newspaper, Chief Chidi Nkwopara at his palace.

Nkwopara, while reacting to the problem alleged that it was a group of Aro Settlers in the town who were causing the trouble. "The occasion is going on, they cannot deter us".

A source, however, said that the protesters wanted their autonomous communities to be carved out and the Council Chairman, Vincent Ehirin removed.
