Ogun abolishes school fees for disabled students
From Charles Coffie Gyamfi (Abeokuta)

PHYSICALLY challenged students in all academic institutions in Ogun State have been exempted from paying school fees.

Governor Gbenga Daniel who made the announcement yesterday while speaking at a programme organised to mark the 50th anniversary of the Moslem Students Society of Nigeria (MSS) held at the M.K.O. Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta, said the decision should be implemented immediately.

The gesture was in response to a request by the Secretary-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Dr. Lateef Adegbite.

He had canvassed that handicapped students should be given moral and financial support to assist them to lead meaningful lives.

Governor Daniel said: "I have listened to the request of Alhaji Adegbite and this is the second time he would be challenging us within a month and I wish to accede to his request by abolishing schools fees for all the physically challenged students in the state with immediate effect."

He appealed for religious tolerance to enhance peace in the society, assuring that his administration would not discriminate against any individual or particular religion.

The governor requested that any noticeable act of religious discrimination in any school in the state should be brought to his notice.

Congratulating the society for their golden jubilee, Daniel urged members and other Nigerian youths to strive to be in the vanguard of truth, equity and social justice.

The chairman of the occasion, former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Bola Ajibola, said "the most worthy legacy the group has bequeathed to Nigerian Moslems is unity."
