Abiola, Bashiru has declared his support for former military ruler, Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida's 2007 presidential bid. Besides, Bashiru accepted to be a patron of the "IBB Vision 2007", an arm of Babangida's campaign organisation. It was Babangida who annulled the June 12, 1993 presidential election, believed to have been won by Abiola, who died in custody during his struggle to reclaim his mandate. However, Bashiru declared his support for Babangida at the weekend, when members of the IBB campaign group visited the Abeokuta office of the group. Bashiru Abiola warmly received the team led by Alhaji Ahmed Adekunle Makama. Makama in his speech stated that despite the incident, the Abiola and Babangida families had continued to be friends. According to him, Babangida had accepted that he made a mistake by the annulment of the election adjudged as Nigeria's most fairest and freest election. He told Bashiru Abiola that Babangida's team had decided to make him (Bashiru) the patron of the Ogun State chapter. Though Abiola did not respond immediately, but when asked later by reporters whether he had accepted the offer or not, he answered in the affirmative.
