    Nwafor’ll not be impeached -Kalu

    CAJETAN MMUTA, Asaba

EFFORTS to impeach Abia State Deputy Governor, Dr. Chima Nwafor, may come to nought, going by Gov. Orji Uzor Kalu’s assertion that he had intervened yet again to halt the move.

The impeachment process against Dr. Nwafor, accused by the state House of Assembly of gross misconduct and for being a "state security risk," is already at a critical stage with a judicial panel about to conclude investigations into the allegation on him.

But, addressing journalists in Asaba, the Delta State capital, at the weekend, Gov. Kalu said the impeachment move was over.

According to him, he had personally waded into the matter to halt the impending impeachment.

He stated that he took the peace move in the interest of the democratic process, assuring that the deputy governor would not be impeached by the lawmakers.

"I have pleaded with the House of Assembly not to do that (impeach the deputy). And I did that with all amount of sincerity and purpose because of the situation the country has found itself today. I believe that the deputy would not be impeached. I will do everything possible to ensure that he is left alone," he said.

It would be recalled that Gov. Kalu had about three weeks ago visited the state assembly to plead with the lawmakers to spare his deputy, though the governor received a non-committal response from them.

National leadership of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) also visited the assembly apparently to no avail.

Other peace overtures to the assembly were made by deputy governors of the South East.
