52 prisoners housed in containers in Taraba Some 52 prisoners are currently being housed in cargo containers at the Mutun-Biyu Satellite Prison due to non-completion of housing projects in Taraba State. The prisoners were being subjected to conditions that make them vulnerable to diseases due to the unhealthy environmental condition they were being exposed to. The Mutum-Biyu prison, according to investigation, is a reflection of the general condition of prisons in the state, including lack of workshops, walls, deplorable sewage disposal systems, lack of transportation and residential accommodation. The special assistant to President Olusegun Obasanjo on prison matters, Chief Tunji Adepo, who visited the state, was taken to the Muntun-Biyu Satellite Prisons to see things for himself. Speaking when he paid a courtesy visit on the state deputy governor at the weekend, after a visit to the Mutun-Biyu prison, Adepo decried the condition under which the 52 prisoners were kept. He told the deputy governor that the federal government was concerned over condition of prisons and was making efforts to make changes. Reacting to the condition of the prisoners at Mutun-Biyu, the Deputy Governor, Alhaji Armaya’u Abubakar, said: “Prisoners are sleeping in a container as if they are no human beings.” The special assistant on prison matters replied thus: “I went there; I saw it myself, and you will see action within the next few weeks.”     TO NEXT NEWS PAGE...
