2007 Presidency Not Negotiable for North - Goje
From Saka Ibrahim in Gombe
Governor Danjuma Goje of Gombe State yesterday again said the North would not negotiate the 2007 presidency with any zone.
Goje, who spoke at the first meeting of members of the House of Assembly from the North-east, said the South would be unfair to the North if it still insists on producing the next president come 2007.
The governor, who spoke in his capacity as the chairman of the Northern States Governors' Forum noted that it was the turn of the North to produce the next president in 2007.
He said it does not matter which zone of the North the president comes from in 2007.
Said Goje: "On zoning of the presidency, I am speaking in my capacity as the current chairman of Northern state governors. We have taken a stand that the issue of zoning the presidency to the Northern part of the country is not negotiable. It can come from any zone of the North, North-east, North-central or North-west.
"The presidency must rotate between the North and the South. We expect by 2007, it will be our turn. The South will be eight years by 2007. The South will not be fair to the North if it insists on producing the next president."
He said the North-east meeting of the House of Assembly had no alterior motive and urged the press not to be mischievous.
He also denied any rift between the executive and legislative arms in the state, adding that the relationship between the two have been cordial.
Goje stated that his achievements within a short time were the result of the co-operation between the executive and the legislature. "I cannot do anything without the support of the House of Assembly."
He urged the forum to endeavour to work for the progress of North-east so that it can progress.
The chairman of the North-east forum of members of the state House of Assembly, Hon. Idris Abdullahi, said the meeting cut across parties to move North-east forward.
He commended the effort of Goje for transforming Gombe State within one year.
