Campaign on Freedom of Information Bill Begins
Promoters of the Freedom of Information Bill are set to begin a month-long petition writing campaign directed at members of the National Assembly, specifically the House of Representatives, urging them to hold the Third Reading of the Freedom of Information Bill.
The Third Reading is the House final before the Bill can be transmitted to the upper chamber, the Senate. The plan also included a rally at the National Assembly in the last week of the petition campaign which begins on August 2. 2004.
The campaigners are demanding that the House of Representatives should ensure that the Third Reading on or before August 27, as well as ensure its passage. The petition campaign is one of the series of the series of activities that the campaigners have adopted to compel the National Assembly to pass the Bill.
During the first week of the campaign individuals and groups who are involved in the campaign will send their petitions to the leadership of the House, led by the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
In the second week of the campaign the campaigners will address letters to the chairmen of House committees, particular of the House Committee on Rules and Business, Information, Human Right as well as Justice, amongst others.
The third week will have letters addressed to the chairmen of the various caucuses of the House, specifically the South South Caucuses, the Northern caucus, the South West Caucus, the South East Caucus and the Forum on Good Governance.
Each of the letters would urge the officers to use their offices and positions to positively influence the passage of the freedom of information bill as a fulfillment of the expectations of the Nigerian people whom they represent and as a demonstration of their commitment to the anti-corruption campaign.
Also in the final week members of the coalition plan to hold a peaceful protest at the National Assembly, where they would present copies of all the petitions generated during the three week petition writing campaign to the leadership of the Assembly.
