36 Nigerian Kids in London Summer Camp Schoola From Bukola Olatunji in London Formal classes begin this morning for about 36 Nigerian students between the ages of 9 and 16, who are participating in this year's two-week Summer Camp, organised by the British Council, Nigeria. About 20 students participated in last year's event, the first to be organised by the council in the country. While 33 of them aged between 9 and 14 are at the Regent Language Holidays at Box Hill School in Dorking, the remaining 3 students above 14 are at St. Mary's College in London, with a yet-to-be confirmed number of their mates from the Port Harcourt office of the Council. They are participating in the programme with other children from France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Iran, Italy, Japan, Russia, Spain, Syria and Turkey. The camp opened on July 3 with two 13-year-old students from Russia and Syria, who are on a six-week programme, while other groups of children have been coming in between for different periods, but mostly two weeks per time. The Nigerians fall within the last group as the camp closes on August 14. During this period, they would attend language lessons all mornings and some afternoons Monday through Thursday and participate in other activities during the rest of the days and weekends. These include shopping, swimming, cricket, table tennis, football, rounders, archery, t-shirt making, alien making face painting, fancy dress and mask making as well as art and craft workshop among others.
