Petroleum Engineers Want More Investment in Gas Sector From Onyebuchi Ezigbo in Abuja Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Nigeria Council, an umbrella body of engineering professionals in the petroleum industry, has called for increase in the level of capital investment in the gas sector and promotion of adequate technology to realise Federal Government's objective of turning the country from sole oil to oil and gas-based economy. Speaking at the annual international conference in Abuja, the engineers said the country stood to gain economically under dual oil and gas propelled economy. Chairman of SPE-Nigeria, Alex Musa who addressed newsmen on the organisation's two-day International Conference and Exhibition, tagged NAICE 2004, also alerted the Federal Government on the need to move fast and take advantage of the favourable swing of interest by world economic powers of Europe and America towards oil and gas potentials in the Gulf of Guinea to position the country as a major player in the industry. Musa said although Nigeria shares her dominance with Angola as far as the oil and gas resources in the region is concerned, Nigeria has the advantage of technical manpower availability as well as great market potentials that is capable of making us a major player in the industry.
