Lagos Accuses FERMA of Environmental Degradation
By Shaka Momodu

Lagos State government has accused Federal Road Management Agency (FERMA) of environmental degradation and poor sanitary habits.

The state Commissioner for the Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello, made this charge at a press briefing over the weekend, stating that following the launch of the KAI campaign in November 2003 by the state Governor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the ministry deployed the Environmental Sanitation Corps nicknamed KAI Brigade to various areas in the metropolis to sanitise the environment and remove all manner of illegal activities be it street-trading, hawking, public defecation, crossing the express, dumping of refuse, vandalisation of government properties and blocking of drainages among other nuisances.

"The CMS/Marina axis was the first point of call with the removal of all illegal structures and general sanitisation of the area," Bello siad, adding that the ministry received several letters from the Federal Ministry of Works, requesting the ministry to stop further action on all its activities on federal highways and roads. "In particular, various announcements were made on the electronic and print media on the purported illegal activities of the KAI brigade and LASTMA officials on federal highways and the plans of FERMA to hijack such functions/activities hitherto performed by these state government agencies."

He declared that "with the deployment of untrained personnel as FERMA officials, the already sanitised environment became degraded, all the previously dislodged illegal traders and occupants encouraged to return back to the highway with active connivance of these so-called officials.
