Bribe Scandal May Tear Airline Operators Apart By Ndubuisi Francis A major rift is brewing among domestic airline operators over bribery allegation levelled against a director of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Captain Paul Ugochukwu. Ugochukwu, NCAA's Director of Training and Licensing was last week suspended over allegations of involvement in bribery and corruption. He was accused by a group masquerading as Aviation Stakeholders, of accepting bribe to facilitate the licensing of some domestic carriers . Following the allegations, Ugochukwu was suspended by the Ministry of Aviation and made to appear before the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Monitoring Unit (ACMU) of the ministry. THISDAY gathered that the suspended director has been appearing before the anti-graft committee since his suspension. However, a letter from the Secretary General of the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), Captain Mohammed Joji, dated July 30, which requested chief executives of some airlines to appear before the anti-graft committee today seems to have stirred a controversy among the airlines. The letter captioned "Suspension of P. Ugochukwu from NCAA" listed those to testify before the committee as the chief executives of ADC Airlines, Sosoliso Airlines, Chanchangi Airlines, Bristol Helicopters, EAS Airlines as well as the AON Chairman, Steve Mahonwu and Captain S.A. Ohiomah of Skypower Express Airways. "We have received a letter from the Honourable Minister of Aviation inviting representatives of our organisation to appear before the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Monitoring Unit (ACMU) of the Ministry to testify on the above heading.
