Pedro Explains New Environmental Initiative By Shaka Momodu New initiative of the Lagos State government to rid the state of the extensive presence of refuse on its roads and streets will be" test-runned" in 20 municipal or highly urbanised local government areas of the state. The local governments include Lagos Island East, West, Mushin, Somolu, Ikeja, Agege, Kosofe, Eti-osa, Ikoyi -Obaland, Surulere, Agboyi-Ketu, among others. The state's Deputy Governor, Mr Olufemi Pedro, while speaking at the end of the inspection tour of Agbado-Okeodo Local Government as part of the monthly sanitation efforts, disclosed that under the new programme, tenants will bag and keep their refuse on their frontage while PSP operators already engaged by the state government would pick them. He said in areas where the programme cannot immediately take off, the state will establish communal depots which will be manned 24hours a day and will be promptly evacuated to avoid creating undue backlog. Pedro also declared that efforts of the state government is already bearing fruits and translates into a cleaner Lagos, adding that the various payments are structured to suit the pockets of each tenant. While condemning the disruption caused by the Federal agencies to the beautification programmes being undertaken in conjunction with the private sector, Pedro said the administration will remain undeterred by flagrant violation of the state laws and plant. Speaking also on the KAI Brigade, Pedro assured that the KAI Marshals will be insured while also urging the Police to protect all such personnel since their functions are dictated under an enabling law.
