ASABA — A POLICEMAN engaged to provide security at a traditional wedding in Asaba, weekend, ended up killing a guest. Within second, he himself was lynched after other guests descended on him.
Another trigger-happy policeman, a sergeant, shot a commercial bus driver and a teenager, weekend, in Ilorin allegedly over a N20 bribe, and ended up being given the beating of his life by irate mob.
The bride at the Asaba wedding collapsed as what was to be her day of joy turned sorrowful. No fewer than 40 guests were injured in the stampede triggered by the shooting of the guest and the subsequent lynching of the policeman.
Vanguard gathered, two armed mobile policemen were engaged by the bridegroom to provide security at the venue of the wedding which took place along Ibusa Road, Asaba. An eye witness said “at about 4 p.m. when the couple were dancing, and guests started to spray them with money, one of the mobile policemen started shooting into the air. Before we knew it, a flying bullet hit one of the guests, who was a close friend of the bride”.
The victim identified as Eli, an undergraduate of the University of Port Harcourt, bled to death. The crowd then descended on the police corporal and beat him to death with cudgels, broken bottles. Chairs, food and drinks littered the venue.
The other policeman luckily escaped but not without losing his gun to the mob. The gun of the killed mobile policeman disappeared in the confusion. Men of the Quick Response Squad later arrived the scene and took the body of their dead colleague to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba.
Attempts to reach the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Charles Akaya, or the state police spokesman, Mr. Victor Obasuyi, proved abortive, but a reliable police source told Vanguard on phone yesterday: “Don’t you know today (yesterday) is Sunday. The CP is already aware and he will brief the press about it on Monday (today), bye.”
