LAGOS—ADivisional Police Officer (DPO) in Lagos, an Assistant Superintendent of Police with the Force Headquarters Annex Lagos and a Lagos based businessman (names withheld) were arrested weekend and moved to Force Headquarters Abuja by a combined team of the Force Provost Marshall and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP’s) Monitory Unit for allegedly forcefully demanding and obtaining N4million cash from a trader at Ojo Alaba International Market Lagos.
Sources said the businessman who was quizzed and recently released by the Special Investigation Panel SIP over breach of peace and national security was said to have connived with the DPO and other officers including the ASP to constantly intimidate assault and obtain money from innocent traders in the market.
The arrests which were effected on Friday Vanguard gathered followed a strong worded petition from counsel to some of the victims, E C Igweokolo to the IGP, Mr. Tafa Balogun alleging unlawful use of policemen by the businessman to intimidate, assault and extort money from two traders in the market.
According to sources, the businessman unlawfully operated a Kangaroo court and a detention cell at the market where innocent traders are tried and detained if they fail to meet monetary conditions imposed on them.
The police boss who sources hinted was irked by the unprofessional behaviours of his men in the matter promptly mandated the Force Provost Marshal and the Monitoring Unit under the leadership of ACP Donaldo Iroham and Ahmed Yusuf respectively to investigate the allegation following which the DPO and others were arrested and moved to Abuja where they are presently being quizzed.
Efforts to get the reactions of the Force Public Relations Officer, Mr. Chris Olape failed. But a dependable source at the office of the Force Provost Marshal Annex Lagos which confirmed the arrest told Vanguard that the trio were still being held on the orders of the IGP who reports said was determined to get to the roots of the matter with a view to ascertaining the extent of involvement of the DPO and the ASP in the matter.
